Camcorder Review: Sony PMW-EX1 XDCAM Camcorder

Solid State Performer

The rarified realm of professional video cameras used to require an outlay of $60,000 and up, and this was minus a lens. Adding decent glass to that package got you to $80,000 or more easily. But you got what you paid for when it came to image quality. The challenge of the independent video producer was to always balance the quality of the image with the cost of the gear, and most often quality lost. Sony's Broadcast division has stepped up to try to meet that challenge: to make broadcast quality images, but to make them for less than $7,000. The result of that effort is the PMW-EX1.

..Spielberg's Gaming History..

Steven Spielberg's collaboration with videogaming goes back more than a decade. He is credited with the story for the 1995 Lucasarts sci-fi adventure, The Dig, in which three astronauts explore an alien world. Saving Private Ryan, Spielberg's 1998 film, is widely regarded as the impetus for the World War II setting of so many videogames. If you've played a WWII shooter, you'll probably recognize the influence of the Omaha Beach scene from his movie. His current project, referred to by the working title LMNO, is being designed by Thief creator Doug Church. It will be the second in his three-game contract with Electronic Arts.

Kino Flo BarFly Softlights Create Industry Buzz

BURBANK, Calif. – Kino Flo has released a new line of wafer-thin, high output soft lights small enough of it in the palm of your hand but bright enough to light a sound stage.

The BarFly® fixtures are available for sale in two slender models: the BarFly 200 (two tubes), and BarFly 100 (a single tube). The BarFly 400 will go on sale in spring of 2007. The BarFly’s operate very much like the Academy Award winning portable 4banks, doubles and singles: they have remote, select high output ballasts and slim, lightweight heads that can work in tight locations where larger, hotter conventional fixtures don’t dare to tread. The difference really is in size and shape.
